Heltec WiFi LoRa 32 Expansion Kit
This device from Heltec comes in a couple of varieties. I got my hands on a couple of Exp Kits with GPS and Touchscreen.
I think these are going to be a big hit for off-grid mesh communications, and are quite a step up in performance compared with similar devices currently available in this price range.
Video Review of Heltec’s EXP Kit
Performance
The Heltec v4 Expansion Kit with Touchscreen performs extremely well at receiving, thanks to the built in LNA (low noise amplifier).
Receiving is much better than devices in the same category (T-Deck/etc).
Sending performs very well, in line with a typical un-amped LoRa device.
Touchscreen is bright and responsive
Battery life is ~20 hours per charge
Features
Heltec’s enclosure has a nice aluminum shell, but the back is pretty flimsy so you’ll want to add a case to it.
GPS, a belt clip, and full assembly can optionally be included
This device has several slots for snap-in sensors. Currently only 3 are offered, but I expect more from Heltec soon.
An external rubber-ducky antenna is included, and it performs very well.
Price
Priced at < $100 direct from Heltec, these offer a ton of value for the price.
We offer them at ~ $150 per device, but we include PETG enclosure, install/configure/license Blackout Comms, it ships from us (USA) so you don’t have to wait long or pay tariffs.
Either way, these are a great buy.
Get One (or Several)!
If you use LoRa devices, get yourself a couple of these, and I think you’ll be as impressed as I was.
