Build an encrypted off-grid mesh texting device
Everyone looks one text away until the network they depend on is not there. Blackout Comms is firmware, and a set of DIY devices, for texting the people nearby when that happens.
What the firmware guarantees
- Messages, locations, and other sensitive data are encrypted on the device and again in transit.
- Messages, locations, and pings are digitally signed, so they cannot be forged.
- Direct messages use asymmetric encryption. A trusted device that only relays the packet cannot read it. Only the recipient can.
- Frequency hopping is unpredictable, which limits jamming and keeps neighboring groups from sitting on each other.
It behaves like texting
Pick a person, type, send. If they are in LoRa range, delivery is immediate and the confirmation comes back in seconds. If they are out of range or powered off, the cluster plans a path and keeps pushing the message until it is delivered or it expires.
Build or buy
With a 3D printer, basic electrical work, and a soldering iron, the DIY devices are not a large project. Firmware is free on the download page. Build plans for communicators and nodes are on chatters.io/hardware.
If you would rather not assemble it, a cluster can be built and configured to order: device count, names, and capabilities. It arrives ready to turn on. That is chatters.io/products.
